dial make dialup connections
Tools tab: Dial
The Dial
tool allows you to make direct serial or modem
connections using PPP (point-to-point protocol).
To set up dialup accounts, use
net(tools)
to specify the login, password,
and telephone number(s).
To set up dialup accounts, go through the dialup section of the net(tools) . Since you can specify just about all of the parameters (with the exception of the port) of a dialup account, once you have selected one in the dialer, you can just connect by clicking the connection button. Or, you can modify the password, phone number, port, and baudrate before making the connection. As long as the connection button is down, the dialer will try to maintain the connection; redial if necessary.
The serial port at the bottom of the ipaq is defined as UART. Any plug in type of CF or PCMCIA modem or serial card, if property detected, will be shown as NS16550 in the port selection. If you insert or withdraw the card after you fire up the dialer, just click on the account field to refresh the available port list.
Baud rate usually is not a concern for regular modems, but some modems may need to be talked to at a specific baud rate (e.g., 19200 for Sprint PCS phone). Correct baud rate is very important for direct serial connection: make sure it matches the connection rate at the other end.
You may need to dial a special prefix (e.g., a 9 to get to the outside line) for your phone system or a specific modem initialization string for a particular brand of modem. You can set these up in the net(tools) .
If the connection account is set up for a direct serial connection, the dialer will not take any phone number and will not talk to modem but instead will start up PPP directly. This is very different from a regular modem connection.
Once you click the connection button, the dialer will talk to the
modem, if appropriate, and start up PPP. If PPP negotiation is
successful, a "Connected at xxxx
" message will appear and you are ready
to pass information using this connection.
In general, you should not kill the dialer using the task list but break the connection first by clicking the disconnect button. You will not be able to exit the dialer while it is in the connected/connecting state.
If you need to pop the modem/serial card out, make sure you hit the disconnect button in the dialer first.
